What Are Press-on Nails and Why Are They Popular?

Day to Night, Short to Long Wear

Having walked past the aisle of beauty products in supermarkets, I was never interested in trying the flimsy-looking press-on nails on the shelf. Funny enough, my first encounter with press-on nails started from an awkward office conversation.

It was just before 2020 Valentine’s, I wanted to dress up for my date and I went to the nail salon, sat there for 5 hours, paid 280 Australia Dollars (roughly 190 USD) to get my nails done beautifully. Yes, my heart was bleeding for the price, but I could not think of any alternative option at that time. When I went to the office next day, my colleagues started to gather around. I worked at a non-profit organisation where everyone dressed professionally. One colleague sitting next to me noticed my nails, and asked people to come around to take a closer look. “Oh my god look at her nails!” It was loud enough to attract the attention of almost 10 people around me, and people shot at me with questions, “how much do they cost?” “Isn’t it inconvenient to type and do things?” “Definitely is a pop of colour in the office, isn’t it?”… Although I received lots of compliments, as an introverted girl, I did not quite enjoy the attention it brought me in the office. So I searched online, “How to cover my own nails?”. The answer is – you guessed it – Press on nails.

What Are Press-on Nails?

Press-on nails are premade nail set that you can use adhesive to attach to your own nails, presenting a look that you just had your nails done at a salon. However, the ones sold at supermarket usually come with a set of 24-30 nails, and you choose whichever size that is close to your own nail size, so the fitting is not spot on. Also, they always look very cheap and low quality (Indeed they are. Mine broke after one wear. I suppose that’s why they give you 24-30 so you can just throw away after one use.)

What’s Good About Them?

What interested me the most about press-on nails is that I can choose to wear different styles from day time to night time, with a fraction of cost that I would’ve paid at a nail salon. If I still worked at the non-profit organisation, I could’ve worn a clean-looking classic French tip set to work. And after work, when I felt like a casual drink and wanted to look a bit “extra”, I could’ve worn a more sparkly evening design. All comes with the convenience of taking off the old set and press the new set on! Without the need to travel to nail salons, you also save lots of time.

Things to Pay Attention to When You Choose Press-on Nails

Material and quality:

The reason why I don’t like the press-on nails sold at the supermarket, although they are very cheap, is that they look so flimsy and “fake”. The cheap plastic makes the nails very bendable, and I had to throw them after one time wear. So when we started Secure The Nails, we wanted to make sure that the material of our press-on nails is the same as the ones you would’ve got in a nail salon. It should not be easy to bend them, instead, the nails should be hard enough to sustain physical impact as we use hands so often in life. When the press-on nails have high quality, they can then be re-worn and re-used for as many times as you want. It is an economically efficient way in the long term.

Size and fitting:

Gone are the days of 30 pieces of press-on nails set. Here at Secure The Nails, we introduce you the perfect fitting for your nail size. Just like clothing, everyone wears different sizes from different brands. Secure The Nails studied the ergonomics of human nails and carefully selected the size fitting for your ultimate comfort wear. Check out our size chart here.

Handmade or machine made:

So many things are mass produced in the modern day and age. A machine can make tens of thousands of identical pieces under one instruction setting. However, the human touch is lost, and it is no fun to know that you are just having the same as everyone else. From the beginning, Secure The Nails always ensure that our press-on nails are handmade by real nail artists. We want you to feel cared for, to experience the individual human touch on each of our press-on nails set. Because of mass production, machine-made nails usually come with terrible quality, the polish is easily to be scratched off, the paint is unevenly distributed, the outside rim looks not covered…These problems will not happen if they really are handmade.

Sticker and glue:

Each press-on nails set should come with a tool bag including the gel stickers and glue, leaving you the option to wear it for a short period of time or as long as you wish. With good quality gel stickers, you can wear them for up to 5-7 days. It is an amazing option for a weekend out or to look presentable in the office. The special nail glue has stronger adhesiveness and without damaging your natural nails, it guarantees the wear time of 2-4 weeks (it depends on how much housework you do, how often you wash your hair etc.)

The press-on nails are getting more and more popular for good reasons. Once you start to try the top-notch quality press-on nails, you’ll be amazed by the convenience and flexibility of getting the “nail done by salons” look all at the comfort of your home, with a much more affordable price point compared to the nail salons. And you can wear the same set again and again in the future when the style calls in! You can check out our press-on nails collection at Secure The Nails here.
